Fudge for a Cape Town Winter

Yesterday snow fell on top of Table Mountain! We don't get snow every day on Table Mountain. We don't even get snow every year. Yesterday, there was that biting cold that seems to penetrate right through a pair of jeans. Just the weather for some thermal underwear ... and a piece of fudge. And as it turned out, just the right sort of weather for snow on Table Mountain.

There is something seemingly warming about fudge on a cold winter's day. We expect to hear about more snow today on the Western Cape mountains over the next few days. Unfortunately today, with hard intermittent rain showers, the outdoor Porter Market in Tokai was not the ideal place for shopping or having breakfast.

Setting up at The Palms on a winter's day. Dry inside; wet outside.
The Palms Market in Woodstock, on the other hand was a great out of the rain destination for tasting and buying a wide range of fresh and freshly made food. Our fudge found favour amongst shoppers this morning as they looked for ways to stave off the cold. So it was coffees and fudge, breakfast rolls and fudge, mushroom skewers and fudge. Well you get the picture.

Our Wellingtons Squares were especially popular today. Those are the triple layer of decadence - chocolate, fudge and shortbread biscuit. Choose between our "plain" Wellington Squares and the Espresso Wellington squares for that coffee buzz experience. Our Traditional Butter Fudge remained a firm favourite and Ginger Fudge was popular with those wanting a fudge with that warming ginger experience.

Its been a wet Cape Town winter this year, especially this month of August. So, here's hoping for a true start to spring in September, with warm sunny Saturdays. Porter Estate Market in Tokai lends itself especially to those warmer days.... days to embrace the sun, admire the natural setting beneath the slopes of the Constantiaberg and of course days to buy some fudge.

Fathers like Fudge Too

Tomorrow is Father's Day. As a father I like fudge and I am certainly not the only one. I enjoy most of the flavours, but if I was pressed to come up with a favorite from our range, it would probably be our Wellington Squares [decadent sandwich of chocolate and shortbread biscuit with fudge in the middle]. My other favorites are our Espresso Wellington Squares and our Black Forest Fudge - fudge with cherries, cherry liquor and topped with dark chocolate!

For that special dad or man in your life, why not spoil him with a packet of fudge for tomorrow? We have many different flavours to choose from. They are all popular, but the best liked by dads this year might well be Wellington Squares, Espresso Wellington Squares and you can never go wrong with our traditional butter fudge or our brown sugar butter fudge.

So visit us today at Porter Outdoor Market and The Palms in Woodstock and get your Father's Day surprise. See you there and if you see me nibbling a Wellington Square on the side... well you know now that it is my favourite!

The Market at The Palms Celebrates 50 Markets Today!

Join us at The Market at The Palms today as they celebrate 50 markets. Up to 50 prizes to be given away including some of our glorious fudge!

The Market at The Palms is a great indoor market, not least of all in winter, when it quite often seems to rain on a Saturday! It was already raining from early this morning. In addition there is free, covered parking on a Saturday morning for customers visiting The Palms.

They have a large range of foods and drinks - visit their Facebook page for photos and more information: www.facebook.com/MarketAtThePalms

Unfortunately for our regular customers at Porter Estate Market, this market is closed for a second week due to rain, but we are holding thumbs that we will open again on Saturday 15 June if the weather is kind to us.

So join us at The Palms Market this Saturday for a celebration of 50 markets since Market at The Palms first opened its doors not that long ago.

Fudge for Mother on Mother's Day

Does your mother like fudge? If she does, then tomorrow is the ideal time to buy her some for Mother's Day. Visit us, if you live in Cape Town, at The Porter Estate Produce Market  in Tokai from 9.00am until 1.00pm, or The Market at The Palms in Woodstock from 9.00am until about 2.00pm. The fudge is available in packets or as pieces or we can put some different flavours of fudge in a packet for you.

Your mother may enjoy receiving one of our more recent fudge creations, including coconut fudge, demerara sugar fudge and chocolate marshmallow fudge. Some of our other interesting types of fudge include honey fudge, cranberry fudge, ginger fudge and wellington squares [similar to millionaire's shortbread, except with fudge in the centre instead of caramel]. Our wellington squares can also be purchased with or the inclusion of espresso to give a rich warm coffee flavour. For a more traditional "you can't go wrong" type of fudge, there is our traditional butter fudge and for a slight twist from the traditional, why not buy our brown sugar fudge or our vanilla fudge?

Fudge back at Porter Estate Market and the Market at The Palms.

We hope you missed us and our fudge last weekend. We certainly missed you.

We decided to take a short break and visit the Garden Route last week. Whilst there, we took the opportunity to visit the Harkerville Market located on the N2 between Plettenberg Bay and Knysna. This market also operates on a Saturday morning and being an outdoor market, it reminds us a bit of "our own" Porter Estate Market. The market was busy in spite of the fact that the ground was wet after recent rains. A little later in the morning, we drove past the Wild Oats Community Farmers' Market at Sedgefield, but unfortunately did not have time to visit there on this trip. This popular market opens early and closes at 11.30am. If you enjoy markets, then we would suggest a visit to both of these markets when visiting the Garden Route.

The good news is that we will be back at the Market at The Palms and The Porter Estate Produce Market again this coming Saturday [11 May 2013]. So look out for us on Saturday morning. We hope to have a good selection of our ever popular fudge flavours including Traditional Butter Fudge, Brown Sugar Butter Fudge, Vanilla Fudge and then some of our more unusual fudges such as honey, coconut and ginger. Top of the range, we will probably also have our Wellington Squares [similar to millionaire's shortbread] and our Espresso Wellington Squares for you to taste and purchase.

Getting ready for the market
So this weekend you can stock up on some of your favourite fudge flavours at The Palms in Woodstock or Porter Market in Tokai. Fudge is also great for a road trip. One of our regular customers loves the Kalahari National Park and before her family heads up there 3 or 4 times a year, she comes along to Porter and stocks up with a couple of packets for the journey. So whether you are travelling to the Kalahari or the Garden Route, stock up with our fudge before you go. Some fudge out there is certainly not what we would call "glorious" and I'm sure, as you are a fudge connoisseur, you would agree.

Glorious Fudge, Easter Eggs and Easter Markets.

This Easter weekend, we invite you to visit us at three Cape Town markets for some of the best fudge to be found in the Western Cape.

On Saturday morning, we will be at our regular Porter Estate Produce Market in Tokai [open from 9.00am until 1.00pm] and The Market at the Palms in Woodstock [open from 9.00am until 2.00pm]. On Sunday 31 March  we will be at the Natural Goods Market at Canal Walk [open from 9.00am until 2.00pm].

We have also recently brought out a new type of fudge , which we call chocolate marshmallow fudge. Quite a mouthful of a name, but then so is this fudge... quite a[delightful] mouthful.

Chocolate Marshmallow Fudge... yummy!

A combination of chocolate and fudge with a slightly "springy" texture. Maybe a little like eating a chocolate fudge marshmallow. A bit difficult to describe really... so best just to come along and taste for yourself at one of the markets this weekend.

Oh yes and Easter Eggs and Easter Bunnies. We have some specially wrapped up for you. They are also made from the chocolate marshmallow fudge

So we hope you will visit us at a market near you this weekend.
